Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Wednesday that “one country, one law” is the need of the moment, stressing that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is meant for the whole nation and not targeted at any specific community.
Speaking at a Constitution Day event at Bharat Mandapam, Naqvi said a UCC would strengthen the constitutional spirit and that the “Amrit Kaal” of Independence is an opportunity to adopt the Directive Principles related to it. “The uniform civil code is for the entire country, not for any particular community. ‘One country, one law’ is the need of the hour,” he said.
Naqvi said India’s secularism is rooted in the majority community’s commitment to coexistence and tolerance. He contrasted this with Pakistan, saying that after Partition, India chose the path of secularism while Pakistan declared itself an Islamic nation. He argued that the inclusive nature of India’s Constitution reflects the values and culture of the majority community.
He said that while India’s Constitution, adopted in 1949, remains strong and stable, Pakistan has struggled with constitutional uncertainty for decades. “Pakistan has remained trapped in fanaticism and bigotry, while India has become the world’s largest democracy with a strong Constitution,” he said.
Naqvi also criticised the Congress, saying that some leaders create “confusion” while waving the Constitution. “Freedom of expression cannot be misused as a certificate of anarchy and abuse,” he remarked, claiming that certain groups want to spread fear and misinformation.
He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, saying the government is pushing ahead with reforms across economic, social, cultural, and administrative sectors, which he believes have strengthened India’s image globally.
Naqvi accused some Opposition groups of launching “communal attacks on constitutional reforms” and said their efforts amount to a “criminal conspiracy” against the Constitution. He urged people to reject attempts to “defame India’s democracy.”
He said a common civil code is necessary for “the nation, religion and humanity” to reinforce the constitutional spirit.
Former cabinet minister Dr. Satya Narayan Jatiya, VHP Delhi president Kapil Khanna, and Delhi minister Kapil Mishra were also present at the event.
