Major Muslim organisations in Australia have strongly condemned the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, calling it a horrific act of violence and urging people to stand together in unity and compassion.
The Australian National Imams Council said it was deeply saddened by the attack that claimed several lives. In a statement, the council said, “Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those who witnessed or were affected by this deeply traumatic attack.” It added that this was a moment for all Australians, including the Muslim community, to come together with compassion and solidarity.
The Australian National Imams Council and the Council of Imams NSW said the Muslim community unequivocally condemned the shootings. “These acts of violence and crimes have no place in our society. Those responsible must be held fully accountable and face the full force of the law,” the statement said. The groups acknowledged the pain and fear felt across the community and expressed support for everyone affected by the incident.
They also appealed to Australians to reject all forms of violence and stand together during this difficult time.
The Lebanese Muslim Association also condemned the attack in strong words. In its statement, the organisation said its thoughts were with all those impacted by the “horrific incident”. “Violence against innocent people has no justification and no place in our society. It is a betrayal of our shared values and must be unequivocally condemned,” it said. The association stressed the need for unity, compassion and restraint and reaffirmed its commitment to peace, social harmony and the safety of all Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as a dark moment for the country. Speaking to reporters, he said the attack targeted Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should have been a time of joy and celebration. “An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” he said, adding that the incident represented an attack on the nation’s way of life.
