Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday clarified that the organisation has no political agenda and cautioned against viewing it through the lens of the BJP. Speaking at the RSS 100 Vyakhyan Mala programme in Kolkata as part of the centenary celebrations, Bhagwat said it is a huge mistake to equate the Sangh with political parties or treat it as just another service organisation.
He said that the RSS works for the betterment and protection of Hindu society and its core goal is to create morally upright and virtuous individuals, or sajjan, who strengthen national pride and contribute to the country’s development. Bhagwat stated that while the growth of the Sangh may affect the interests of some, the organisation itself does not consider anyone its enemy.
“The Sangh is often misinterpreted. Many know the name but do not understand its work. The RSS only thinks about the betterment of Hindu society. It does not operate with animosity,” Bhagwat said. He warned that politics is often unnecessarily conflated with the Sangh, adding that it is wrong to view the RSS solely through the lens of the BJP.
Highlighting the organisation’s role in fostering unity and Hindu solidarity, Bhagwat said the country will again become Vishwaguru and it is the duty of the Sangh to prepare society for that purpose. He also called for a return to forgotten roots and mentioned Bengali icons such as Swami Vivekananda, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, praising Roy for his lifelong work in social reform and stating that the RSS seeks to carry forward his legacy.
To convey the reality of the organisation’s work, the RSS has organised lecture and interaction sessions in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Bhagwat stressed that opinions about the RSS must be based on facts rather than narratives or secondary sources.
