US President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Iranians to continue protesting and take control of their institutions, assuring them that “help is on its way.” In a post on Truth Social, he invoked the slogan “MIGA,” suggesting “Make Iran Great Again,” and announced that he had canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the “senseless killing” of protesters stops.
“Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!” Trump wrote.
The protests, triggered by worsening economic conditions, have spread to all 31 provinces in Iran. Reports from Reuters say that around 2,000 people have been killed and more than 10,700 arrested, though Iran’s government has not released official figures. The Associated Press said it could not independently verify the toll due to widespread internet shutdowns and reporting restrictions.
Iran’s economy is under severe stress, with the rial falling to more than 1.4 million to the dollar, amid rising inflation and soaring prices for basic goods. The unrest has been fueled further by cuts to fuel subsidies and the removal of preferential exchange rates for many imports. The protests follow heightened external pressures on Iran, including a 12-day war with Israel in June, US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, and the weakening of Tehran’s regional alliances.
Trump also warned that Washington is considering strong options if Iran continues to violently suppress protesters. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he said, “The leaders of Iran called yesterday… They want to negotiate. But we may have to act before a meeting.” He added that the US is getting hourly updates on the situation and assessing a range of responses, including possible military action.
On Monday, Trump announced a 25% import tariff on products from any country doing business with Iran, a move aimed at punishing Tehran for the crackdown. China has condemned the tariffs, while Iran has not yet responded publicly.
With the death toll surpassing 2,000 and thousands more detained, Trump described the demonstrators as “patriots” and called for the protection of their rights, urging them to continue their protests and hold the authorities accountable.
