The Delhi Police has submitted written arguments outlining its position on whether to press charges against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The charges stem from a sexual harassment case filed by women wrestlers.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal shared copies of the arguments with both the defence counsel representing the accused and the complainants involved in the case. The judge has scheduled the next hearing for December 20, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. for potential clarifications.

Quoting the judge, the court proceedings highlighted, “Matter is listed for filing of written submissions on behalf of the prosecution. Filed. Copy supplied. List on December 20, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. for clarifications, if any.”

During the court appearance, Brij Bhushan Singh presented himself alongside co-accused Vinod Tomar, the suspended assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The Delhi Police had previously filed a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan Singh, a six-time Member of Parliament, on June 15. The charges included sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Vinod Tomar also faced charges in connection with the case.

This development follows a series of legal manoeuvres, with Brij Bhushan Singh asserting in earlier hearings that there were contradictions in the witness accounts and maintaining that checking pulse without sexual intent, should not be deemed an offence.
