Tension gripped parts of Kokrajhar in western Assam after a mob allegedly vandalised houses belonging to members of the Muslim community following claims that suspected beef was found in the courtyard of a Hindu household.
The incident took place at No. 3 Nayasara village under the Salakati police outpost. Police said the situation escalated after locals alleged that cow meat had been deliberately thrown into the courtyard, triggering anger among residents.
Mob Targets Minority Houses, Videos Surface
According to police, a group soon gathered and began attacking houses belonging to the minority community, causing significant damage to property.
Local residents claimed that the vandalism occurred even in the presence of police personnel, raising concerns over the response of authorities. Videos from the incident, which have circulated on social media, show a mob damaging homes and throwing objects.
Some villagers alleged that the meat was intentionally placed to provoke tension, while others suggested it might have been brought from a nearby wedding. Authorities are currently investigating the source of the animal remains.
Police Detain Seven, Deploy Security Forces
Police said seven individuals, including three women, have been detained for questioning in connection with the violence.
“Prompt intervention and deployment of security forces helped bring the situation under control and prevented further escalation,” police said.
A large number of security personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, and officials said the situation, though tense, is now under control.
Residents Demand Action, Probe Underway
Residents from both communities have demanded strict action against those responsible for triggering the unrest and carrying out the vandalism.
Police said an investigation is underway to identify all those involved and determine the circumstances that led to the incident. “We are examining the origin of the meat and the sequence of events that led to the violence,” officials said.
No injuries or casualties have been reported so far, but authorities have urged people to maintain peace as efforts continue to prevent any further flare-up.
