RSS Leader Among 30 Arrested in Murshidabad Ram Navami Violence; Situation Under Control

Murshidabad Violence During Ram Navami, 30 Injured

HIGHLIGHTS

Around 30 people were injured after a Ram Navami procession in Raghunathganj, under Jangipur subdivision of Murshidabad district, turned violent on March 27. The incident led to widespread tension, with reports of vandalism, arson, and stone-pelting targeting shops and properties.

According to officials, the situation is now under control after the deployment of central paramilitary forces, Rapid Action Force (RAF), and local police. Security personnel continue to patrol sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.

Clashes Break Out During Procession

The violence reportedly began in the Sisatala area near Raghunathganj Police Station. Locals alleged that some participants in the procession made provocative remarks targeting the Muslim community.

A verbal argument soon escalated into clashes. Tensions intensified at Phultala Crossing, where a section of the crowd allegedly vandalised and set fire to several shops and damaged vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, and vans.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes. A local vendor said, “A large crowd suddenly turned violent and started attacking shops. People were running to save their lives.”

Allegations of Targeted Attacks

Residents claimed that Muslim-owned shops, fruit stalls, and eateries were specifically targeted. Some also alleged that Eid-related posters and flags were torn down during the violence.

Bariul Islam, a local resident, said, “This area has always seen communal harmony, but outsiders came and disturbed the peace.”

Jangipur Municipality Chairman Mofizul Islam questioned the police response. He said, “Even in the presence of police, shops were selectively targeted. It appears the violence was pre-planned.”

Counter Claims by BJP Leaders

However, BJP leader Subal Chandra Ghosh rejected these allegations. He claimed that the violence was triggered by stone-pelting on the procession.

“This was an attempt to disrupt the Ram Navami rally. Our workers were targeted, and police action has been unfair,” he said.

30 Arrested, Investigation Underway

Police have arrested 30 people in connection with the incident, including RSS leader Kingshuk Bhattacharya and Hindu nationalist leader Babai Chakraborty.

DIG Murshidabad Range Ajeet Singh Yadav confirmed that the situation is stable. “Adequate forces are deployed, and the situation is under control. Investigation is ongoing, and strict action will be taken,” he said.

Several injured persons are being treated at Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital.

Political Reactions and Calls for Peace

The incident triggered strong political reactions. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury termed the violence “deeply concerning” and questioned the lack of preventive measures.

TMC MP Khalilur Rahaman appealed for calm, saying, “People must maintain communal harmony and not fall for provocation.”

ISF leader Nawsad Siddique alleged a “deliberate conspiracy” to create unrest in the district.

Mamata Banerjee Blames ‘Planned Riots’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the issue at a rally in Raniganj, alleging that the violence was orchestrated.

“Officers were transferred to facilitate riots. Money is being used to incite violence. No one will be spared,” she said.

She also expressed regret over the clashes and criticised the display of weapons during processions. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible,” she added.

Situation Under Control, Appeal Against Rumours

Authorities have urged residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours. Civil society groups have demanded strict action against the accused and compensation for those who suffered losses.

For now, the situation remains tense but under control, with heavy security deployed across the area.
