Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the RSS-BJP, alleging that their core objective is to weaken and ultimately “finish” the Constitution of India.
He made the remarks while flagging off the ‘Run for Ambedkar, Run for Constitution’ marathon in Delhi ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14.
Addressing the gathering at Mandi House, Gandhi said, “Ambedkar ji’s main message was that of the Constitution. Without the Constitution, what we call India would not have been there.”
“They don’t want equality”: Gandhi’s allegation
Gandhi accused the RSS-BJP of opposing the idea of equality enshrined in the Constitution.
“Today, the people who are of the mindset of RSS-BJP want to finish off the Constitution. Whatever they say, their main objective is to erase the Constitution because they don’t want that everyone in India is considered an equal,” he said.
He further added, “They even bow before Ambedkar ji’s statue, but their objective is to finish off the Constitution. Our objective is to protect and strengthen it.”
Event held to spread constitutional values
Explaining the purpose of the marathon, Gandhi said the initiative aims to take the message of constitutional values across the country.
“We want that the thought of the Constitution and its protection reaches every corner of the country, and that is why we have organised this run,” he said.
In a Facebook post later, he reiterated that the event reflects commitment to the ideals of B. R. Ambedkar and the Constitution.
“Today, when constitutional values are under assault, we must unite and fight against every injustice and act of discrimination with the same resolve as Babasaheb,” he wrote.
Call for unity and wider participation
Former Indian cricketer and Telangana minister Mohammad Azharuddin also participated in the event and supported the initiative.
He said, “This campaign should happen all over India. ‘Run for Ambedkar, Run for Constitution’ is a very good initiative and should be promoted further.”
Azharuddin also stressed the need for unity, saying the country can progress only when people stand together.
