Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has announced that a special force called the “Durga Squad” would be created to tackle crimes against women if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in West Bengal.
Speaking at an election rally in Sainthia, Singh said the proposed initiative would focus on preventing atrocities against women and ensuring strict action against offenders.
“‘Durga Squad’ for Women’s Safety”
“We will constitute ‘Durga Squad’ to prevent atrocities against women. Those who trouble women will be strictly dealt with,” Singh said at the rally.
He added that a BJP government would ensure “rule of law” in the state and strengthen law enforcement mechanisms for women’s safety.
Election Framed as “Fear vs Trust”
Framing the upcoming polls as a decisive political battle, Singh said voters must choose between “fear and safety, corruption and development, and dadagiri and democracy.”
“You have to decide if you want fear or safety, corruption or development… The time has come for change,” he said.
He further stated, “This election is about fear versus trust. On May 4, darkness will end and a new morning will dawn, and the lotus will bloom in Bengal,” referring to the BJP’s election symbol.
Criticism of TMC Government
Singh also launched a sharp attack on the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led government, accusing it of failing to deliver development despite being in power for over a decade.
“The people of West Bengal gave the TMC three consecutive chances. Fifteen years is not a short time for development,” he said.
He further claimed that the state’s share in India’s economy had declined from 10 per cent to 5 per cent under the present government, and alleged that governance has created an atmosphere of fear.
Focus on Women Voters
Singh also appealed to women voters, highlighting the BJP’s promise of implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
He said the measure reflects the party’s commitment to strengthening women’s participation in politics and decision-making.
Poll Schedule
West Bengal will go to the polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.
As campaigning intensifies, the “Durga Squad” announcement has become a key talking point, with the BJP positioning women’s safety as a central issue in its election pitch.
