In a recent rally, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi voiced his worries about the potential demolition of Sunehri Masjid in South Delhi, raising concerns about the country’s religious landscape. He stressed the historical importance of the mosque for Muslims, referencing the loss of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
“We have lost the place where we worshipped for 500 years (Babri Masjid in Ayodhya). You can see what’s happening there now,” said Owaisi
Owaisi warned against forces attempting to disrupt the country’s unity and urged people to stay united. He encouraged the youth to actively participate in preserving mosques.
“Young people, maintain your milli hammiyyat (community concern) and strength and keep the mosques populated, otherwise our mosques will be taken away from us,” he said.
Addressing the controversy around Sunehri Masjid, Owaisi sought public opinion on the proposal to remove it, arguing that such actions violate constitutional rights, particularly Article 25, which guarantees freedom of religion. He questioned the purpose behind the mosque’s potential removal, expressing concerns about the protection of the country’s culture and heritage, invoking Article 29.
Owaisi raised questions about ‘perceived bias against Muslims’, wondering why the BJP and the Narendra Modi-led government show ‘animosity towards mosques and the sounds emanating from them’. He reiterated his call for unity and expressed hope that the youth would find ways to protect themselves, their families, and their communities amid various challenges.
