The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, on Wednesday, expressed its opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and has formally submitted its objections to the Law Commission.

They have demanded that not only tribal communities but also all religious minorities should be exempted from the application of such a law.

“The working committee of the Board had approved the draft response prepared on UCC in the executive meeting on June 27 and on Wednesday it was presented for discussion in the virtual general meeting of the Board,” the spokesman of the Board Qasim Rasool Ilyas told PTI.

“This report was unanimously approved, after which it has been sent to the Law Commission,” he said.

The Law Commission had set a deadline of July 14 for parties and stakeholders to submit their objections to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). However, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) had previously requested a six-month extension to this deadline.

Ilyas stated that during the meeting, nearly all members of the Board (around 250 out of 251) were present. In the meeting, they were urged to individually express their opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the Law Commission and also encouraged to mobilize their relatives, friends, and others to do the same.

“The AIMPLB is of the view that not only tribals but every religious minority should also be kept out of the purview of UCC,” he said.

Ilyas said, “The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has always been against the UCC. It is of the view that imposing only one law in the name of UCC in a country like India, which consists of people belonging to multi religions and cultures, is a violation of democratic rights.”

The AIMPLB is a well-known non-governmental organization representing the interests of Muslims in India. It was established in 1973 with the primary aim of safeguarding and upholding the implementation of Islamic personal law within the Muslim community in India.

In the ongoing consultation process for the Uniform Civil Code, the Law Commission has invited inputs from various stakeholders, including the general public and recognized religious organizations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently advocated for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, emphasizing its importance. He has accused the opposition of using the issue to misguide and provoke the Muslim community.
