K’taka: Youth arrested for garlanding Tipu Sultan statue with slippers in Raichur

Tension gripped the Sirwar town of Raichur District, Karnataka, after a statue of Tipu Sultan was garlanded with slippers in the early hours of Wednesday by unknown miscreants. In connection with the incident, 23-year-old Akash Talwar, a resident of the same town confessed to his doing and was arrested by the police on Friday. Two special teams were formed to investigate the matter.

Following the incident, a large number of people openly condemned it and staged a protest at the Tipu Circle. The protest saw blocking of the road, torched tyres at the protest site, demanding immediate arrest of the people behind the vandalism, and attempting to disturb the communal harmony.

The protest was dismissed only after the protesters gave a deadline of 24 hours to arrest the miscreant(s), as per a local report.

Sirivara police registered a case in this regard and took three persons into custody, after checking CCTV footage for possible clues revealing the miscreants’ identity.

The accused, Talwar, was one among them and confessed to his crime during questioning by the police. As per the reports, the accused has been sent to judicial custody.

The incident that took place on January 31, had led to widespread anger and outrage among the people following the violation of the statue of the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan. However, the tense atmosphere has subsided now.
