Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has alleged large-scale electoral malpractice, claiming that a significant number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament were elected through what he described as “vote chori” (vote theft).
“Every Sixth BJP MP Elected Through Vote Theft” Says Rahul Gandhi
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi made strong allegations against the ruling party, claiming that electoral manipulation has influenced parliamentary outcomes.
“Through vote theft, sometimes individual seats are stolen, and at other times, an entire government. Of the 240 BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha, roughly every sixth MP secured their seat through vote chori,” he said.
He further added that if elections were conducted fairly, the BJP would not even reach 140 seats in the current Lok Sabha.
“Their real fear is the truth. If fair elections were held, they would not be able to win even 140 seats today,” he said.
‘Ghuspethiya’ Remark Triggers Political Debate
In a sharp political attack, Gandhi also used the term “ghuspethiya,” saying that if BJP’s own political language is applied, questions should be raised about its elected representatives.
“They are not hard to identify – should we, in the BJP’s own parlance, call them ‘ghuspethiya’?” he asked.
He also alleged that institutions responsible for elections and voter lists were being influenced and controlled, which he said undermines democratic fairness.
“The institutions they keep in their pockets, the ones they manipulate to distort voter lists and the electoral process, are themselves remote-controlled,” he alleged.
Earlier Allegations on Assembly Elections
This is not the first time the Congress leader has raised concerns about electoral fairness. Earlier, Gandhi had also described the BJP’s victories in recent Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam as being influenced by “vote theft.”
He accused the BJP of weakening democratic processes and attempting to undermine public mandate.
“The theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a big step forward in the BJP’s mission to destroy Indian democracy,” he had said previously.
Political Reactions and Ongoing Debate
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently rejected such allegations, calling them baseless and an attempt to discredit democratic institutions after electoral losses.
The controversy comes at a time when political tensions are already high following closely fought elections in multiple states.
