‘He Is Muslim, So We Are Not Interested’: Bengaluru Law Student Alleges Friend Denied Job Interview Over Religion

A law student in Bengaluru has alleged that one of his Muslim friends was denied a job interview opportunity because of his religion, sparking a wider discussion online about religious discrimination in hiring practices.

Mohammed Ameen, a law intern working with a legal firm in Bengaluru, shared the incident on LinkedIn, saying he was disturbed after learning about the alleged discrimination faced by his friend.

According to Ameen, his mutual friend was not rejected after an interview but was allegedly denied the chance to even appear for one because he is Muslim.

“I recently came across a shocking case involving one of my mutual friends,” Ameen wrote in his LinkedIn post. “He wasn’t denied a job. Actually, he was denied an interview opportunity itself because he is a Muslim.”

WhatsApp Screenshot Sparks Online Debate

To support his claim, Ameen shared a screenshot of an alleged WhatsApp conversation in which a recruiter reportedly wrote, “He is Muslim, so we are not interested.”

The post did not reveal the company’s name or provide independent verification of the incident. However, it quickly gained attention online and triggered a debate on social media about discrimination in workplaces.

Ameen said what disturbed him most was how openly the alleged reason was communicated.

“There was no ‘your profile doesn’t match our requirements’ or any formal explanation,” he wrote. “The reason was stated openly.”

‘Gap Between Law and Reality’

The law student said the incident made him reflect on how constitutional values of equality and non-discrimination often fail to match everyday experiences.

“We often read about equality, non-discrimination and constitutional protections,” Ameen said. “But when such incidents happen in real life, the gap between law and reality becomes difficult to ignore.”

He also highlighted how many people who face discrimination may not pursue legal action because of emotional stress, lack of resources, or fear of prolonged battles.

“The person who faced the discrimination isn’t willing to challenge it,” he said, adding that not everyone has the strength or means to fight a legal case.

Ameen clarified that his post was not meant to gain attention but to start a serious conversation around hiring bias.

“This post is not written for engagement,” he wrote. “I found the incident disturbing.”

Social Media Reactions Divided

The post received mixed reactions online. Some users supported Ameen and said the case reflected a larger social problem.

Law student Gourav Kangla commented that the incident pointed to deep-rooted prejudice in society.

“This reflects a deeper problem where people judge others based on caste and religion rather than character, skills, and humanity,” he wrote.

Another user, digital marketing professional Sudhanshu Punia, said the issue was bigger than one individual case.

“The society that normalised discrimination is the problem,” he said. “Fix the root, not the symptom.”

However, some users questioned the lack of evidence and asked for more details about the alleged recruiter and company involved.

Lawyer Siddhant Singh wrote, “If this is true, complete details should be shared. Posting a screenshot without proof raises questions.”

Tech consultant Bhagesh Chavan also asked for verification, saying, “Which company was it? Who was the HR?”

Growing Discussion Around Workplace Bias

The incident has once again raised concerns about alleged religious discrimination in employment and whether bias still affects hiring decisions in India.

While the claims remain unverified, the discussion has highlighted larger questions around equal opportunity, workplace fairness, and the challenges faced by minorities in professional spaces.
