A fresh political war of words has erupted in Karnataka after state Home Minister Priyank Kharge strongly criticised BJP MP Ramesh Jigajinagi over his remarks on Dalits and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The controversy began after Jigajinagi questioned why Dalits should be concerned about the RSS while reacting to Priyank Kharge’s criticism of the organisation. He also reportedly warned Kharge against targeting the RSS, saying that “no one who has taken on the RSS has survived politically.”
The remarks quickly triggered sharp reactions from Congress leaders.
Priyank Kharge questions Dalit space in RSS
Responding strongly, Priyank Kharge said Jigajinagi’s statement itself raises serious questions about the place of Dalits within the RSS.
Kharge asked whether the BJP MP’s remarks reflected frustration over Dalits not receiving equal respect in the organisation.
“Is this the frustration of a Dalit leader who himself cannot gain entry into the sanctum sanctorum of the RSS?” Kharge asked.
He further questioned whether Jigajinagi was indirectly warning Dalits to stay away from an organisation that, according to him, believes in a hierarchical social structure.
‘Does RSS eliminate critics?’ asks Kharge
Kharge also objected to Jigajinagi’s comment that those who challenge the RSS do not survive politically. He said such a statement raises disturbing questions.
“What does it mean when you say no one who challenged the RSS has survived? Does it mean the RSS is a terror organisation? Does it eliminate those who question it?” Kharge asked.
He accused the BJP leader of trying to create fear and discourage criticism of the RSS.
Invokes Ambedkar, says he won’t be afraid
Reaffirming his ideological stand, Kharge said he draws courage from B. R. Ambedkar and the Constitution of India.
“The courage to question and think rationally comes from Ambedkar. Those who follow his path do not fear threats,” Kharge said.
He added that he only fears the loss of morality, not political intimidation.
