Madhya Pradesh minister and senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya has triggered a political controversy after making remarks linking the use of public infrastructure and welfare schemes to alleged religious statements.

Speaking at a road construction foundation ceremony in Indore, Vijayvargiya said that while the government does not discriminate among communities, some people allegedly use objectionable language.

He said, “This road is being built here. I saw that both Hindu and Muslim brothers live here. Many Muslim brothers call us ‘Kafirs’. If we are Kafirs and we have built the road, then don’t walk on it.”

He further added, “If we are Kafirs and money from the Ladli Behna and Ladli Laxmi schemes is reaching your home, then do not take it.”

“Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” Reiterated

The minister also emphasized that the government follows a policy of inclusive development.

He said, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas is our policy. Whether you vote for us or not, our job is to serve the people.”

He also clarified that the state government has not discriminated against any community and continues to work for all citizens.

Political Reaction and Criticism

The remarks quickly drew criticism from opposition leaders and social media users, with some calling the statement divisive.

Congress leaders accused the BJP minister of promoting polarising narratives. A Congress spokesperson said that no community labels political representatives in the manner suggested and alleged that such statements are used to create unnecessary controversy.

Critics also pointed out that linking welfare schemes and public infrastructure to religious identity could send a negative message in a diverse society.

Welfare Schemes and Development Politics

The minister referred specifically to Madhya Pradesh government schemes such as the Ladli Behna Yojana and Ladli Laxmi Yojana, which provide financial assistance to eligible women and families.

He argued that such benefits are part of welfare governance and should not be politicised or linked to religious identity.
