A man from the Hindu community in Uttarakhand has accused his Muslim wife and her family of forcing him to convert, assaulting him, and forging marriage and child-related documents. The case has been registered in Uttarakhand and is currently under investigation.

The complainant, Vivek Singh, alleged that he met Yasmeen while working in Delhi and was initially told she followed Sanatan Dharma and regularly visited temples. He later claimed that after discovering she was Muslim, he initially refused marriage.

However, Singh said Yasmeen’s family assured him that the marriage would be conducted according to Hindu rituals, after which he agreed.

Marriage Under Hindu Rituals, Later Dispute Over Documents

According to Singh, the couple was married on March 24, 2020, in Gangolihat as per Hindu customs.

He has alleged that later a nikahnama was prepared using altered identity details without his knowledge. Singh further claimed that after the birth of their son in 2022, the child was circumcised and documents were created to change the child’s name without his consent.

In his complaint, Singh said, “Gradually, pressure was allegedly mounted on me and my family to change our religion.”

Allegations of Assault and Threats

Singh also alleged that he was mentally, socially, and financially harassed after his wife and child were taken to her parental home.

He named his wife Yasmeen, her parents Sakir Ali and Sajo Bano, and two others, Parvez and Firoz, alleging that they pressured him to convert and threatened him when he resisted.

He further alleged that he was assaulted on April 14 and May 5. According to him, on May 8 he left with his son and returned to Gangolihat, but later received threats from Firoz, who allegedly warned him of harm to his family and child.

Police Register FIR Under Religious Conversion and Criminal Charges

Based on the complaint, police in Pithoragarh registered a case against five people under relevant sections of the law, including the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act along with charges of assault, abuse, and forgery.

Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde said, “On the basis of the complaint, an FIR has been registered against Sakir Ali, Yasmeen, Sajo Bano, Parvez and Firoz under sections related to assault, abuse, forgery and the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act. All facts are being investigated and further legal action will be taken accordingly.”
