Students of Loknayak Jayaprakash Institute of Technology (JP Engineering College) in Chhapra, Bihar, staged a protest after alleging that the principal’s driver and a security guard entered the girls’ hostel late at night, entered students’ rooms, and behaved inappropriately. Following the demonstrations, the outsourcing agency removed the accused driver, Neeraj Kumar, from service.
The protest began outside the college’s administrative block, where students accused the college administration of compromising hostel security, mental harassment, and arbitrary decision-making. According to the students, the driver and a guard entered the girls’ hostel at midnight and attempted to remove their belongings while asking them to shift from single rooms to double occupancy.
Students raise safety concerns
The students said college rules do not allow male staff to enter rooms inside the girls’ hostel. They pointed out that even parents are not permitted inside students’ rooms, raising serious concerns over how male employees were allowed to enter the hostel at night.
Several students also alleged that they faced threats of disciplinary action and expulsion for raising complaints. They demanded an impartial inquiry and strict action against those responsible.
One student, Geetanjali, alleged that the administration subjected students to mental harassment and claimed that sick students were often denied proper assistance. She further alleged that complaints were dismissed and students were threatened with action if they continued to protest.
Driver removed after protest
Following the agitation, the outsourcing agency employing the accused driver dismissed him from service. The move helped calm the protests, although students continued to demand a fair investigation into the incident and improvements in hostel safety.
Some protesters also alleged that the accused employee had previously faced complaints related to misconduct. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
College yet to respond
The college administration has not issued an official statement on the allegations so far. As a result, several questions remain unanswered regarding the incident and the hostel’s security arrangements.
