A man allegedly preparing to slaughter a cow was arrested after being injured in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district on Saturday, September 5. His alleged accomplice escaped, police said.

Circle Officer (Mawana) Pankaj Lavania said police received information that two men had taken a calf into a sugarcane field near the Ataura Road canal bank, allegedly with the intention of slaughtering it.

Police Say Accused Opened Fire

A police team surrounded the area and asked the men to surrender. According to Lavania, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police during the confrontation.

Police returned fire, injuring one of the accused, identified as Bilal, in the left leg. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Mawana Community Health Centre for treatment.

His alleged accomplice, Bhoora alias Javed, managed to escape from the spot, police said. Teams have been conducting raids to locate him.

Calf, Pistol Recovered

Police said they recovered a live calf, an illegal country-made pistol, one live cartridge, an empty cartridge shell and tools allegedly used for cow slaughter from the spot.

A case has been registered at Mawana police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Arms Act and the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act.

Police also said that both Bilal and Bhoora have criminal cases pending against them.
