PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday welcomed the BRICS condemnation of the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack but questioned the bloc’s silence on the war in Gaza and the US Israeli strikes on Iran.
In a post on X, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said India, as the current BRICS chair, should have shown greater leadership by pushing for a resolution that addressed the conflicts in Gaza and Iran.
“Welcome the BRICS condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack. But India, as the current BRICS chair, should have shown courage and true leadership by moving a resolution that also unequivocally condemned Israel’s genocide in Gaza and the US Israeli attack on Iran,” Mehbooba said.
She also claimed that the strikes on Iran had killed political leaders and hundreds of schoolchildren.
Mehbooba Says Terrorism Cannot Be Condemned Selectively
Mehbooba said international responses to violence should not depend on the identity or nationality of those affected.
“Terrorism cannot be condemned selectively. Civilian blood has no nationality, and international justice cannot have double standards,” she said.
Her remarks came after BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration on Saturday.
BRICS Condemns Pahalgam Attack
The declaration condemned the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people and injured several others.
The BRICS leaders also called for stronger efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms. The declaration called for preventing the cross border movement of terrorists, disrupting terror financing networks and dismantling safe havens for terrorist groups.
The bloc’s condemnation of the Pahalgam attack was welcomed by Mehbooba, although she criticised what she described as the absence of similar action on Gaza and Iran.
