A newly built interlocking road near Lallapura Muslim School has been left partly blocked by heaps of garbage and construction material waste, even though the road work is complete. Residents and pedestrians say they are still struggling to use it.
On one side of the road, plastic bags, household waste and old construction material have piled up. On the other side, soil and scattered bricks take up the remaining space. The road has little room left for people to walk.
Local residents said they had hoped the new road would make it easier to move around the area. Instead, the waste along its edges has made the passage narrower and caused problems for those walking on foot.
The school nearby makes the situation worse. Children and their parents have to walk through a stretch affected by garbage and a foul smell every day. Residents said the state of the roadside has stopped them from getting the full benefit of the new road. Photographs of the area have shown garbage, plastic waste, soil and construction debris lying along the road.
Efforts to get a response from the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, or from the department responsible for building and cleaning the road, were unsuccessful.
