Police in Kochi, Kerala, have launched an investigation into possible extremist links after a fire was allegedly set outside the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam on October 12. A 32-year-old man, identified in reports as Ebin Paul, has been arrested in connection with the incident, and investigators are examining his communications and financial transactions.
The fire broke out at Blossom Nursery, which is operated by the synagogue trust and located outside the synagogue, around 2.40 am. According to police, the accused arrived in a blue car, allegedly poured petrol on the premises and set fire to boards near the entrance before fleeing.
CCTV footage reportedly captured the incident. No injuries were reported.
Police Examine Suspect’s Phone and Possible Network Links
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate possible extremist links. Police are examining the accused’s mobile phone, including his Telegram and WhatsApp communications, to identify people who may have directed or financed the attack.
According to reports, a preliminary examination of the device indicated that the suspect had communicated with individuals and online groups suspected of having foreign links. Investigators are also examining alleged references to Jewish institutions and other potential targets, as well as possible cryptocurrency payments.

Kochi Deputy Police Commissioner Arun Pavithran said the suspect’s electronic devices had been sent for forensic examination.
“He was in contact with someone who induced him to carry out these acts and paid him for them,” Pavithran told reporters. “The arson attack at the synagogue is a sensitive matter, and we are investigating all possible angles.”
Investigators are also looking into whether the accused was involved in a separate arson incident in Muvattupuzha. Police have reportedly claimed that he admitted to a role in that incident.
The Hindu reported that a court on October 15 granted five days of police custody to the accused. Police also reportedly seized suspected narcotic substances from his rented accommodation in Puthencruz.
Central intelligence agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have joined the inquiry, according to reports. Investigators are examining possible links to networks operating outside India. No confirmed organisational connection has been publicly established in the information available.
Historic Synagogue Comes Under Security Watch
The Kadavumbhagam Synagogue, located in Ernakulam Market, is believed to date back to the 12th century. The structure was rebuilt in the 17th century and renovated in 2018. It is among the historic Jewish places of worship reflecting Kochi’s long-standing Jewish heritage.
Pavithran said security at Jewish institutions and police patrols in their vicinity had been increased following security alerts last month. He said the enhanced arrangements would continue.
Police are also reviewing a fire that partially damaged the historic Koder House in Fort Kochi on September 29. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence linking that incident to the synagogue fire.
The investigation into the October 12 arson attack is ongoing, with police examining the suspect’s alleged contacts, motive and possible involvement of others.
