Activist Javed Mohammad Released After 21 Months in Detention Under NSA

Javed Mohammad, a 58-year-old activist affiliated with the Welfare Party of India, has been released from incarceration after spending 21 months behind bars. His arrest on June 11, 2022, under the National Security Act (NSA) stemmed from his involvement in a protest that erupted in Prayagraj following Friday prayers. The demonstration sought the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma due to her remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

Accused by the police of being the “mastermind” behind the unrest, Javed Mohammad faced a tumultuous period during his detention. Authorities unlawfully detained his wife and youngest daughter at a police station and further exacerbated the situation by demolishing their home, citing it as an unauthorized construction.

His daughter, Afreen Fatima, a student activist, serving as the national president of the Fraternity movement claimed her father was arrested without any warrant.

Mohammed gained prominence for his active participation in protests against the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) and his vocal criticism of the BJP and government officials. Afreen Fatima has also been targeted by the police.
