Police in Lucknow’s Gosainganj area have arrested a 31-year-old tuition teacher, Ankit Verma, hours after the father of a 14-year-old girl he had been teaching filed a complaint alleging that he sexually assaulted her.
According to the complaint, Verma, who was also the family’s neighbour, went to the house on a Sunday evening on the pretext of teaching the girl, found her alone, closed the door from inside and assaulted her. The complaint alleges that when she resisted and raised an alarm, he beat her, threatened her with serious consequences and tried to silence her.
The girl told her family when they returned home, according to a Hindi news report. They went to Verma’s house but found he was not there. Her father then went to Gosainganj police station on November 2 and filed a complaint. Bharat Samachar reported that an FIR was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other provisions, including for sexual assault, physical assault, abuse and threats.
Police formed three teams to track down the accused, using technical and manual methods and local information. A journalist’s post on X said Verma had fled after the incident but was caught within a few hours. Verma was arrested on Monday, and police said he was presented before a court after the legal formalities were completed.
Gosainganj Assistant Commissioner of Police Rishabh Yadav confirmed the arrest, according to the Hindi report. It said a team led by Inspector D.K. Singh took him into custody.
The allegations are yet to be tested in court, and the investigation is continuing. The girl’s identity has been withheld to protect her privacy.
