The Delhi Police have filed an FIR against TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for her remarks on National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma, citing Section 79 of the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This section pertains to acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

The controversy arose when Moitra commented on a video showing Sharma being assisted with an umbrella during her visit to meet women injured in the Hathras stampede. The video showed someone holding an umbrella for Congress leader Anand Sharma. Moitra’s comment, which referred to ‘pajamas’, stirred controversy before she removed it.

Moitra’s comment on a social media platform was considered inappropriate, leading to a complaint by Sharma herself and subsequent action by the NCW.

In response to the NCW’s actions, Moitra challenged the Delhi Police to take immediate action, even providing her location in Nadia and stating, “Come on @DelhiPolice please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest,” Moitra wrote, adding, “I Can Hold My Own Umbrella (sic),”

The police have requested details from the social media platform regarding Moitra’s remarks.
