The Jammu and Kashmir Congress has voiced serious concern over the security situation in the Jammu region following a recent attack in the Kathua district, urging the government to initiate a robust response to ‘combat terrorism and protect lives’.

On Monday, five army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, lost their lives while five others sustained injuries in a militant ambush in the remote Machedi area of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack, the fifth of its kind in the Jammu region within a month, has triggered widespread condemnation and raised alarms among political leaders. The resurgence of militancy in the region, after being eradicated over two decades ago, has been particularly troubling.

Expressing shock and outrage over the Kathua attack, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Vikar Rasool Wani said, “We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in the Jammu region. It is crucial for the government to take proactive measures,” said Wani.

“The government must launch a full-scale war against terrorism to protect the lives of our armed forces, security personnel, police, and civilians,” he said.

Bharat Sinh Solanki, the Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir affairs in charge, condemned the attack and offered condolences to the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, party spokesperson Ravinder Sharma echoed calls for swift and robust governmental action against terrorism in the Jammu region.

As tensions escalate following the series of attacks, there is mounting pressure on authorities to bolster security measures and clamp down on insurgent activities threatening stability in the region.
