Teacher Who Asked Students to Slap Muslim Boy in Muzaffarnagar Released on Bail

Muzaffarnagar slap

Tripta Tyagi, the teacher who was caught on video last year instructing students to slap a Muslim boy, surrendered at a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) court on Thursday and was granted bail.

The video, which surfaced on August 23, 2023, showed Tyagi at Neha Public School in Khubbapur village, Muzaffarnagar, asking her students to slap the boy, while making a communal remark. The incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across political and social circles.

On Thursday, Additional District Judge (POCSO) Alka Bharti granted Tyagi bail, requiring her to furnish two sureties of Rs 25,000 each. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on Saturday.

Tyagi’s lawyer, Kapil Ahlawat, confirmed that she had surrendered in court and applied for regular bail. Earlier, on November 23, the Allahabad High Court had rejected her anticipatory bail plea and ordered her to surrender within two weeks.

Tyagi faces charges under various sections, including voluntarily causing hurt, insulting a person, and committing malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. She has also been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act.

Following the incident, the Muzaffarnagar education department served a notice to the school in connection with the matter.
