A school teacher at Aligarh Muslim University was shot dead on Wednesday evening in a shocking attack that has sent shockwaves across the campus. The victim, Rao Danish Ali, 30, taught computer science at the ABK High School on the university campus for over a decade.
According to AMU Proctor Mohammad Waseem Ali, Danish was walking near the Kennedy Auditorium with two colleagues around 8.50 pm when two men on a scooter confronted them. One of the gunmen reportedly said, “You don’t know me yet, now you will,” before opening fire. Danish was shot at least twice in the head and collapsed on the spot. He was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed that both attackers fired at Danish. Police have formed six teams to investigate the incident, reviewing CCTV footage from the area and gathering information from the victim’s family and colleagues. “We are examining all possible angles, including personal enmity,” SSP Jadon said, assuring that the assailants would be apprehended soon.
The shooting occurred near the university library canteen, part of Danish’s daily routine, and took place hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the state’s improved law-and-order situation in the assembly.
AMU Vice Chancellor Naima Khatoon visited the hospital and assured strict action. The university has intensified security across the campus in response to the incident, which has left students and staff deeply disturbed. CCTV footage exists but is reportedly unclear due to darkness and fog at the time of the attack.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and further details on the motive and suspects are awaited.
