A 20-year-old final-year diploma student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) allegedly died by suicide inside her hostel room on Monday evening. The student, identified as Insha, was pursuing a diploma in Computer Science Engineering and was staying at SN Hall. Her family said she was on a video call with her father, who works in Saudi Arabia, shortly before the incident.

According to police officials, what began as a routine video conversation turned into a distressing episode after an argument reportedly took place. During the call, Insha allegedly threatened to end her life. Alarmed, her father immediately contacted his relative Dr. Zafar Iftikhar, a resident of Aligarh’s Civil Lines area, who rushed his son to the hostel.

When the hostel room was found locked from inside, and there was no response, the AMU proctorial team and Civil Lines Police were alerted. At around 7:30 pm, the door was forcibly opened. Insha was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. She was immediately taken down and rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) at around 8:00 pm, where doctors attempted to resuscitate her.

However, according to JNMC Principal Prof. Anjum Parvez, the student was already in a critical condition when brought in. “Her face had turned blue, and she was unresponsive,” he said. Insha was later declared dead during treatment.

Confirming the incident, Prof Mohammad Wasim Ali, Proctor of AMU, told ANI, “The girl was a final-year diploma student and had been staying in SN Hall. Around 7.30 pm, information was received that she had allegedly hanged herself in her room. She was immediately taken to the medical college, where doctors made all efforts to save her, but she could not be revived. The matter is under investigation. Her room has been sealed.”

Senior university officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Mohsin Khan, visited JN Medical College following the incident.

Police sources also stated that it has come to light that the student’s father had remarried, and family circumstances are being examined as part of the investigation. However, no conclusion has yet been drawn.

The AMU administration has ordered an internal inquiry, while the police have begun formal proceedings to determine the exact cause behind the tragic death.

The incident has once again raised alarm over student safety and mental health support at AMU, as this is not an isolated case.

On 24 October 2025, an undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at AMU Women’s College. Earlier, on 20 February 2025, Mohammad Shakir, a first-year MA Theology student, was found hanging from an iron rod in Mumtaz Hostel. With multiple student deaths reported within a year, voices are growing louder demanding urgent reforms, counselling facilities, and effective crisis-response mechanisms on campus.
