The Ministry of Minority Affairs has released new data showing that more than 5.17 lakh Waqf properties were initiated for registration on the UMEED portal during the six month window, and 2,16,905 of them were approved by designated officials. The UMEED Central Portal, which was launched by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on June 6, 2025, stopped accepting uploads at midnight on December 6, following the rules of the UMEED Act, 1995 and clear instructions from the Supreme Court.

According to the ministry, uploads increased sharply as the final hours approached. A statement said that several review meetings, training workshops and interventions from senior officials “gave a fresh push” to the registration drive, leading to a surge in uploads before the deadline. The ministry said 5,17,040 properties were initiated on the portal and 2,16,905 were approved. Another 2,13,941 properties were submitted by users but are still pending in the system. A total of 10,869 properties were rejected during verification.

The ministry said it had provided continuous support to Waqf Boards through workshops and training sessions. “To support this massive national exercise, the Ministry of Minority Affairs conducted continuous workshops and training sessions with State and UT Waqf Boards,” the statement said. A two day workshop for master trainers was held in Delhi, aiming to give officials practical knowledge of the uploading process. Senior technical and administrative staff were sent to different states, seven zonal meetings were organised across India, and a dedicated helpline was set up to resolve issues reported by users.

Chandra Shekhar Kumar, the secretary of the Minority Affairs Ministry, held more than 20 review meetings to guide and monitor the progress. Officials said his constant supervision and direction played a key role in speeding up the uploads. “This phase marks an important step toward transparency and efficient digital management of Waqf properties across India,” the ministry said.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of Waqf properties initiated on the portal, with 92,830 entries. Of these, 86,345 were Sunni Waqf properties and 6,485 were Shia. Maharashtra followed with 62,939 entries, and Karnataka with 58,328. West Bengal recorded 23,086 initiated properties.

On Friday, Minister Kiren Rijiju ruled out extending the deadline. He said the government had “no power to change” the six month limit because it was fixed under the Waqf Amendment Act and reinforced by the Supreme Court. However, he added that the ministry understood the difficulties faced by Mutawallis, or caretakers, and would not impose penalties or take strict action for three months. Rijiju described the decision as a “humanitarian and facilitative measure.”

The UMEED portal was launched to create a nationwide digital inventory of all Waqf properties. Under its rules, every registered Waqf property in the country had to be uploaded within six months. The ministry said the government is committed to modernising Waqf administration and using the developmental potential of Waqf land for the benefit of minority communities.
