At Least 10 Hurt as Gunfire Erupts at Australia’s Bondi Beach, Suspects Detained

Bondi Beach

At least ten people were injured after gunshots were reported at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, triggering panic at one of Australia’s most popular tourist spots and a major police operation, according to Reuters.

The New South Wales ambulance service said it received calls around 6.45 pm local time about multiple people being shot at the beach. Several injured people were treated at the spot before being taken to nearby hospitals, state ambulance officials told the New York Times.

New South Wales Police described the situation as a developing incident and repeatedly warned the public to stay away from Bondi Beach and nearby areas. “Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” police said in a post on X, adding that officers were present and more details would be shared later. Police initially did not give details about the nature of the incident.

Videos shared on social media showed people running in panic as gunshots and police sirens were heard in the background. The Guardian reported that footage seen by its journalists showed two men dressed in black firing near a bridge at Bondi Beach, with around a dozen shots audible as people screamed and scattered.

Local media reported that police quickly sealed off parts of the beach and nearby roads, while armed officers took positions and ambulances rushed the injured to hospitals. The shooting caused widespread fear at the crowded waterfront, with many visitors running for cover.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the federal government was aware of the situation. “We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police,” the spokesperson said.

Later, Australian police said two people were taken into custody following the reports of gunshots. “The police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area,” New South Wales Police said in another post on X.

Bondi Beach, located on Sydney’s eastern coast, is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks and attracts thousands of visitors daily. Authorities said investigations were continuing and asked residents and tourists to stay away from the area until further updates are issued.
