‘Attempt at Islamisation’: Hindu Groups Demand Demolition of Newly Built Mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda

A newly built mosque in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, has faced protests from Hindu groups, including the VHP and Bajrang Dal, who are demanding its demolition. The mosque was constructed at a site believed by some to be the location where Lord Rama once offered water to Lord Shiva. This spot, on Bambeshwar Mountain, is home to a temple dedicated to Shiva, a deity revered by Hindus for generations, according to the protesting groups.

The right-wing groups claim that the mosque was constructed secretly during the COVID-19 lockdown, when restrictions were in place. “This mosque was built without any permission and during a time when the country was under strict lockdown measures,” said VHP leader Chandramohan Bedi. “We demand that the authorities act immediately to demolish this illegal structure.”

Hindu protestors also raised concerns about what they see as the growing Muslim presence in the area. “There was no Muslim settlement here before the mosque was built. This is a threat to our security,” said one protestor. “This is an attempt at Islamisation of a sacred Hindu site.”

The mosque’s construction is not the only point of contention. In addition to the mosque, it is alleged that other structures, including shrines, have been erected in the area. The VHP has further accused the Muslim community of conducting regular prayers at the site, including Fatiha and Friday prayers, which have added to the tensions.

In response to the protests, VHP leaders have written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the District Collector, and local police, demanding the demolition of the mosque and other structures they deem unauthorized. “The construction of this mausoleum, which was later converted into a mosque, raises serious concerns,” said Bedi. He also questioned how the structure could be built on stone without excavation.

As the situation grows more heated, Hindu groups have threatened to take matters into their own hands. “If the authorities do not act, we will demolish the mosque ourselves,” one protestor warned. The groups also called for the arrest of those responsible for what they call the illegal construction.

While the dispute continues to escalate, local authorities have yet to comment on the demands for the mosque’s demolition or respond to the accusations from the Hindu groups.
