BSF Shoots Dead Bangladeshi Man Attempting Nighttime Border Crossing at Dhabolguri

India’s BSF shot dead 41-year-old Ali Hossain after he crossed 500 metres into Indian territory at Dhabolguri border. The incident comes amid rising infiltration attempts along the India-Bangladesh border, with thousands apprehended in recent years.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) shot dead a Bangladeshi man along the Dhabolguri border on Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to cross into India, a Bangladesh Border Guard official told The Daily Star.

The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Ali Hossain. According to Lieutenant Colonel Syed Fazle Munim, Hossain crossed the international border at night and entered approximately 500 metres into Indian territory.

Hossain was reportedly part of a group of seven to eight Bangladeshi nationals attempting to cut through the barbed-wire fence. The 156 BSF battalion initially fired blank rounds to disperse the group, but when they did not retreat, live fire was used, and Hossain was shot while the others fled, Munim said.

The BSF took Hossain to a hospital in India, where he was declared dead. “The body is currently at a hospital in India, and preparations are underway to return it to Bangladesh,” Munim added.

Context and Border Security Data

The incident occurred during the visit of Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to India, the first high-level bilateral visit since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party came to power in February.

The India-Bangladesh border has seen a high number of infiltration attempts in recent years. In December, the Union Home Ministry reported that 1,104 infiltration attempts were detected along the 4,096.7-km border between January and November 2025, with 2,556 people arrested for trying to enter India without documents.

Since 2014, over 8,500 infiltration attempts and more than 20,800 arrests have been recorded across India’s borders, with the majority along the Bangladesh border alone. Between 2014 and 2024, 7,528 infiltration attempts and 18,851 arrests were reported on the Bangladesh border, according to government data.
