CPM leader Lahek Ali of Baruipur has been granted conditional interim bail by the Calcutta High Court in connection with cases arising from the unrest in Baruipur following the rape and murder of a minor. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh on Wednesday granted Ali interim bail until September 10, subject to certain conditions. The court directed him not to leave the area and to cooperate with the police in the ongoing investigation.
Bail Plea Cites Mother’s Serious Illness
According to sources, Ali’s mother is seriously ill. Citing her medical condition, he had approached the court seeking bail. The court subsequently allowed his plea on humanitarian grounds, subject to the stipulated conditions.
Baruipur Unrest Followed Minor’s Rape and Murder
The case relates to the unrest that erupted in Baruipur in June following the rape and murder of a minor. The incident triggered protests by local residents demanding justice. During the subsequent violence, one person was allegedly killed in a mob lynching, while there were also allegations of attacks on police personnel. Ali, a CPM state committee member and resident of the Khodarbazar area of Baruipur, emerged prominently during the protests and was seen as one of the faces of the agitation.
Police Arrested Ali in July
Following the unrest, several complaints were lodged against Ali in connection with the incidents. Police alleged that he was involved in the violence and registered a case invoking multiple sections of the law. He was arrested from his residence on July 12.
CPM Calls Arrest Politically Motivated
The CPM, however, alleged that Ali’s arrest was politically motivated and part of a campaign of political vendetta. The party has maintained that he was being targeted for his role in raising the concerns of local residents.
Interim Bail Provides Temporary Relief
The latest court order provides Ali temporary relief while the investigation continues. His interim bail will remain in force until September 10, subject to the conditions imposed by the High Court.
