The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Moti Ram Jat, an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), for allegedly leaking sensitive national security information to Pakistan Intelligence officers, the agency said on Monday.
Moti Ram Jat, a resident of Rajasthan, was posted with the 116 Battalion of CRPF in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir — an area where 26 civilians were killed by terrorists on April 22. According to the NIA, Jat has been sharing classified details, including convoy movement, with Pakistani handlers since 2023 and was receiving funds through various channels.
“The accused was actively involved in espionage activity and had been sharing classified information related to national security with Pakistan Intelligence Officers since 2023,” the NIA said in its official statement.
The CRPF said it dismissed Jat from service on May 21 under the relevant constitutional provisions.
“In the course of close monitoring of social media activity by CRPF personnel, in coordination with the Central agencies, one individual was found to have acted in violation of established norms and protocols,” the CRPF stated.
A senior government official told media that Pakistani handlers had approached Jat on social media, pretending to be a woman, and extracted sensitive details from him.
“The CRPF conducts internal monitoring on social media use by personnel. ₹3,000 per month from a foreign account was detected in his account, which raised red flags,” the official said.
Jat was arrested from Delhi and is now in NIA custody until June 6, as ordered by the special Patiala House Court.
