The Delhi Government had issued a public advisory notice, prohibiting animal sacrifice on public roads and spaces, as well as the circulation of pictures or videos of sacrificial acts. A statement from the office of the Developmental Minister, Kapil Mishra, asserts a “zero tolerance” policy on these violations and that strict actions will be taken against those who do not comply with the measures. He also informed that the law enforcement team and the Police have already been given instructions to take swift action against any offenders. The notices caution against the “illegal sacrifice” of cows, calves, camels, and other prohibited animals on Eid-ul-Azha, which is to be observed tomorrow.

“Strict compliance with the advisory is non-negotiable,” Mishra said.

The notice outlines the guidelines that must be followed on the day, which include a ban on uploading photos or videos of the sacrifice online and restrictions on specific places for sacrifice. The notice states that this has been mandated to prevent the “promotion or glorification” of such acts and to maintain public hygiene.

A copy of the notice has also been sent to the Deputy Commissioners (DMs), Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), and the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)- Development. The guidelines notes that they are in pact with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960), Transport of Animals Rules (1978), Slaughter House Rules (2001),  The Delhi Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act (1994) already prohibits cow slaughter, the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006) and one of the Slaughter House rules, which bans the killing of pregnant animals, and those with very young offspring, and animals not certified by a vet.

Earlier, the UP government had also banned the open slaughtering of sacrificial animals on the day of Eid and directed the religious leaders to conclude the sacrifice within a stipulated time.
