A Muslim family in Delhi’s Shakurpur has alleged that a group of 15–20 men attacked family members after a dispute with a rickshaw driver. A pregnant woman claimed her father, brother, and she herself were assaulted, while also alleging rape threats and police inaction.
How Did the Incident Begin?
A Muslim family in Delhi’s Shakurpur area has alleged that a minor argument with a rickshaw driver turned into a violent mob attack involving more than a dozen men.
According to a pregnant woman from the family, the incident began when her younger brother, who sells mobile covers on a roadside cart near Shakurpur Mitthan Chowk, was returning home around 10 pm after work.
She said the argument started after a rickshaw was blocking the road, and vehicles behind were honking.
“My brother only asked the rickshaw driver to move a little because traffic was stuck. He said it politely, but some boys standing with the driver suddenly started abusing and beating him,” she alleged.
The woman claimed her brother tried to explain that he was speaking only to the rickshaw driver, but the group became aggressive.
Family Alleges Mob Entered House and Attacked Members
According to the woman, the situation escalated when her father took her injured brother upstairs to their third-floor room.
She alleged that one of the accused later called others, after which “15 to 20 men carrying sticks and bats” entered their house.
“They broke the door and dragged my brother out. They were hanging him from the rooftop and threatening to throw him down,” she claimed.
The woman said her father pleaded with the group to stop, but was also assaulted.
“They beat my father badly. His thumb was badly injured, and he got stitches. My brother suffered injuries to his head and is still under treatment,” she alleged.
Pregnant Woman Says She Was Assaulted and Threatened
The woman, who said she is pregnant, alleged that she was pushed and physically assaulted while trying to save her family members.
“I folded my hands and begged them to stop. But they pulled my clothes and chain. I got marks on my neck and hands,” she claimed.
She further alleged that some of the accused threatened sexual violence.
“They openly said, ‘We will rape you, no one will be able to do anything,’” she alleged.
The woman said she later had to undergo an ultrasound due to fear about her unborn child’s health.
‘They Were Saying They Would Kill Us’
The family alleged that the attackers repeatedly threatened to kill them during the assault.
“They kept saying, ‘We will kill you today,’” the woman said, adding that more people continued joining the group during the attack.
She also alleged that the accused were members of the Bajrang Dal.
Family Alleges Police Inaction
The woman alleged that her brother had called the police even before the violence escalated, fearing trouble, but officers arrived only after the assault.
She further claimed that police behaved insensitively when the family approached them.
“We filed a complaint, but police did not even complete my brother’s medical examination properly,” she alleged.
The family has also accused Delhi Police of inaction and insensitive behaviour. The woman alleged that when she approached the police, an officer mockingly asked her, “Kya hua, rape karke chhod diya tujhe?” (“What happened, did they rape you and leave you?”).
