The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested 28 people across three districts, claiming they were illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Officials have asked market associations and residents’ welfare groups to be careful when hiring or renting property to foreign nationals.
In the south-east district, 11 people, including two minors, were detained. Another 13 Bangladeshi nationals were caught in the southern district, and four more were arrested from the north-west district earlier in the day.
DCP (South East) Ravi Kumar Singh said the arrested people entered India illegally by crossing the Benapole and Hakimpur borders in Kolkata, West Bengal and traveled to Delhi by local trains.
“They had been living in different areas without any valid documents or permits,” Singh said.
The police have also warned locals to report suspicious activity and check documents when hiring workers or tenants.
