The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case against an associate professor of Jamia Millia Islamia under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act following allegations of verbal and physical assault made by an employee of the university’s Polytechnic department.
Police clarified that no allegation related to religious conversion has been made in the complaint, dismissing claims circulating on social media as false and baseless.
In a statement, the police said an FIR was registered on the complaint of Ramphool Meena, an upper division clerk in the Jamia Millia Islamia Polytechnic, against Associate Professor Riyazzudin of the Civil Engineering department. The case has been registered under Section 3(1)(r) of the SC ST Act 1989 and Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Jamia Nagar Police Station.
According to the complaint, the incident took place on January 13 when the faculty member allegedly approached the employee’s desk, used objectionable language and behaved violently.
“Legal proceedings are underway in accordance with the law. Statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected,” the police said, adding that the matter is under investigation.
The police also categorically rejected claims suggesting a religious conversion angle to the incident.
“It is strictly clarified that the complainant has made no allegation regarding any attempt at forceful religious conversion. Such reports are factually incorrect and baseless,” the statement said.
The police urged the media and the public to refrain from circulating unverified information that could disturb communal harmony.
Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia, in an official statement, denied receiving any formal complaint regarding a physical altercation or a caste-based incident. The university also described a video circulating on social media, purportedly showing the assault, as doctored and unrelated to the alleged incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
