Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during an opposition protest in Delhi on Wednesday, police sources said on Thursday.

The case relates to incidents during a Congress protest in the capital, where INDIA bloc leaders and MPs were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police have also named several Congress leaders and party workers who participated in the protest. The allegations and the role of those named are being examined, according to police sources.

Second FIR Against Gandhi Siblings in Two Days

This is the second FIR registered against Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi in two days.

On Wednesday, Delhi Police booked the two leaders and their supporters for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhavan premises without authorisation during an INDIA bloc protest.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had entered the premises during Tuesday’s protest after opposition MPs were stopped from marching towards the Election Commission. They later staged a sit-in outside the building and were detained by police.

91 People Detained During Protest

Police said 91 people were detained during Wednesday’s protest, including several MPs and opposition leaders.

Rahul Gandhi led INDIA bloc leaders in street protests before he was detained along with several MPs.

The protesters had planned a surprise sit-in at Jantar Mantar after a lunch meeting at a South Indian restaurant on Janpath. Police stopped them on the way, leading to a confrontation between the protesters and security personnel.

Priyanka Gandhi and several other women leaders reportedly lay on the road while holding copies of the Constitution. They were later removed by police and taken away in buses as opposition members raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

MPs belonging to the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), CPI, RJD, IUML and other opposition parties participated in the protest.

The latest FIR comes amid continuing INDIA bloc protests over the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls.
