The Election Commission of India has started examining complaints against a speech made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rajasthan. In his speech, PM Modi suggested that if the Congress party comes to power, it would redistribute the wealth of people to Muslims.

The Congress party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) separately urged the Election Commission to take action against PM Modi’s remarks.

“Congress will give your wealth to those ‘with more kids’: Modi in Rajasthan,” read a news headline highlighting the Prime Minister’s controversial statement.

Sources say the Election Commission has begun examining the complaints against PM Modi’s speech.

The Congress party alleged that PM Modi’s remarks about “redistribution of wealth” were “divisive” and “malicious,” targeting a particular religious community.

“It was a ‘trial of the EC’ too, and the poll panel risks tarnishing its legacy and abandoning its Constitutional duty by setting a precedent of helpless inaction that will go down in infamy,” said Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi.

CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also urged the Election Commission to take cognizance of the complaint and initiate proceedings against PM Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He demanded that an FIR (First Information Report) be lodged for “inciting communal passions and hatred.”

“Urge the ECI to take cognisance of this latest complaint and immediately launch proceedings against Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An FIR needs to be lodged for inciting communal passions and hatred,” Yechury said.
