Twenty-five-year-old folk singer and BJP candidate Maithili Thakur has created waves in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections by winning the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga. She defeated RJD veteran Binod Mishra by 11,730 votes, securing 84,915 votes to Mishra’s 73,185. Thakur, making her political debut, becomes the youngest member of the new Bihar Assembly.
Hailing from Benipatti in Madhubani district, Thakur is trained in Indian classical and devotional music. She joined the BJP in October 2025 and campaigned extensively across Alinagar, a Brahmin-dominated constituency with sizeable populations of Muslims, Yadavs, and Extremely Backward Classes.
“This will be my first term as an MLA, and I will do my best for my constituency. I will serve my people as their daughter,” Thakur told ANI.
Alinagar has traditionally been an RJD stronghold. Veteran Abdul Bari Siddiqui had represented the seat seven times before stepping aside, and in 2020 it was won by VIP’s Mishri Lal Yadav, who later joined the BJP but was replaced by Thakur following legal issues.
Other notable winners include Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who retained Tarapur, and jailed JD(U) leader Anant Singh, who won Mokama in Patna district.
The NDA alliance has comfortably crossed the majority mark with 167 seats. Within the coalition, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party with 78 seats, followed by JD(U) with 66 seats. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) won 16 of the 29 seats it contested. The Mahagathbandhan trails far behind with 25 seats, with RJD winning 20 and the Congress three.
