Self-described motivational speaker, spiritual guide, and life coach Jaya Kishori, who promotes values of minimalism has recently come under fire on social media for appearing to contradict what she preaches.
A now-deleted viral video showed the popular bhajan singer carrying a Dior Book Tote, made with calfskin and valued at approximately ₹2 lakh. In additional videos circulated by users, the 29-year-old spiritual figure is also seen donning a Gucci shawl, holding an iPhone, and wearing a Rolex Datejust watch estimated to be worth around ₹13.8 lakh.
Social media users online have lambasted both Kishori and her followers, accusing her of using religiosity as a means to amass wealth. “If religion is just a profession for someone, why would wearing a ₹1 crore watch matter? The real issue lies with the followers,” one user commented. Many condemned the “business of spiritual and motivational gurus,” while others coming to defended her, arguing that she is neither a monk nor a saint bound to live a simple lifestyle.
Adding to the controversy, the Dior tote features a calfskin lining, which raised eyebrows, as Kishori has publicly advocated for the ethical treatment of cows. Some users called out what they saw as hypocrisy, claiming her choice of luxury accessories clashing with her professed values.
“This is why people should vet their spiritual mentors carefully,” one user wrote, while another said, “These so-called holy figures are anything but; they’re getting rich while their clueless followers soak up every holier-than-thou sermon like it’s pure gold.”
