The Gujarat High Court has extended the temporary bail of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu until June 15, 2026, in connection with his 2013 rape conviction case.
A Division Bench of Justice I J Vora and Justice R T Vachhani considered submissions that Asaram continues to suffer from medical issues and requires constant supervision. The court also noted that no “untoward incident” had been reported during his earlier interim bail period.
Bail extended after medical plea
Asaram had been granted six months’ temporary bail on November 6, 2025, after his sentence was suspended. With that period ending, his legal team moved the court seeking an extension, arguing that his condition requires “regular evaluation and immediate access to emergency care.”
The court, while allowing the extension, stated: “Considering the medical condition of the applicant and the fact that no untoward incident has been reported during the period of release, the temporary bail is extended up to 15th June on the same terms and conditions.”
State opposed extension
The prosecution opposed the plea. Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave argued that Asaram’s appeal in a separate rape case is pending before the Rajasthan High Court, where judgment has already been reserved.
The state urged the court not to grant further relief, citing the seriousness of the charges and the stage of pending proceedings.
Background of cases against Asaram
Asaram is serving a life sentence in a 2013 rape case in which he was convicted by a Jodhpur sessions court in 2018. His appeals in related cases are being heard separately in Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The Rajasthan High Court has also extended his interim bail until May 25, or until the judgment in that appeal is delivered, whichever is earlier.
Next hearing in June
The Gujarat High Court is scheduled to hear the matter again on June 12, ahead of the expiry of the newly extended bail period.
The case continues to move between courts as multiple appeals and bail applications remain under consideration.
