Hamas’ military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, has confirmed the death of several top commanders in the ongoing battle against Israel in Gaza, including its chief of staff, Mohammed Deif.
“Our brave leaders have been martyred defending Gaza,” said Abu Obeida, the group’s spokesperson, in a statement on Thursday.
Among the key figures killed were deputy military commander Marwan Issa, Ghazi Abu Tama’a (head of weapons and combat services), Raed Thabet (commander of manpower and supplies), and Rafeh Salama (commander of the Khan Younis Brigade). Ahmed al-Ghandour and Ayman Nofal, who commanded the Northern and Central Brigades, were also killed.
Mohammed Deif, who had survived multiple Israeli assassination attempts, had played a crucial role in Hamas’ military operations. His death was previously reported by Israeli media, but Hamas officially confirmed it only now.
“The announcement was delayed due to security reasons and battlefield conditions,” Abu Obeida explained.
Israel had earlier claimed to have killed Deif in an airstrike in July 2024, but Hamas had not acknowledged it until now.
Deif’s deputy, Marwan Issa, was considered a key strategist for Hamas, while Ghazi Abu Tama’a oversaw weapons management. Raed Thabet was regarded as one of the most senior Hamas commanders, and Rafeh Salama was known for his close ties to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was also killed in combat in October.
