At the Istanbul Global Donors Forum, a poignant and unusual exercise in altruism was seen at the presentation of the “Innovations in Sustainable Practice” awards. There were four impressive finalists among the nominees from around the world, including a group of physicians delivering life-critical medical services in Gaza.

One of the beneficiaries, Aasif Mujtaba, penned a poignant note, acknowledging that he had made an unorthodox request, not to claim the most valuable award, but for the physicians of Gaza. “For the first time in my life, I prayed not to have the highest award,” they acknowledged. “I wish doctors in Gaza would win the maximum possible assistance.”

The Gaza medical staff won the $50,000 grand prize, and Aasif’s organization won the $20,000 second prize. “It was an honor to be recognized this way,” commented Aasif “but the greatest thrill was seeing the physicians in Gaza aided in the way they so desperately need.”
