India created history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at Navi Mumbai. Chasing a formidable target of 299, the Proteas were bundled out for 246 despite a valiant century from Laura Wolvaardt.
Deepti Sharma was the star performer with the ball, claiming a five-wicket haul to dismantle South Africa’s chase after her crucial unbeaten 58 in India’s innings. Earlier, opener Shafali Verma’s attacking 87 laid the foundation for India’s total of 298 for 7.
India got off to a flying start as Shafali and Smriti Mandhana (45) added a strong opening stand. After Mandhana’s dismissal, India briefly lost momentum with Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (20) falling cheaply. However, Deepti and Richa Ghosh (34 off 24 balls) steadied the innings with a brisk 47-run partnership, pushing India close to the 300-mark.
For South Africa, Wolvaardt’s 101 stood out as she fought a lone battle after opener Tazmin Brits was run out for 23. Shafali Verma’s golden arm provided key breakthroughs, dismissing Sune Luus (25) and Marizanne Kapp (4), while Deepti cleaned up the lower order to seal the victory.
South Africa had earlier won the toss and opted to bowl after rain delayed the start. But India’s top order took full advantage of the conditions, crossing 100 within 18 overs. Despite late strikes from the Proteas bowlers, India’s middle order ensured a competitive total.
This victory marks a landmark moment in Indian women’s cricket, the culmination of years of near-misses and heartbreaks. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side had earlier beaten defending champions Australia in the semifinal, while South Africa had overcome England to reach their maiden final.
As the final wicket fell, the stadium erupted in celebration, with Indian players embracing in tears of joy, a historic night for the women in blue.
