Praising India’s diplomatic role during tensions between Iran and United States, Dr Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi held multiple “very good” conversations with Iranian leadership.
He also expressed deep admiration for the Indian people, calling them “extraordinary” and thanking them for their warmth and goodwill.
Praise for India’s Diplomatic Role
In an interview in Delhi, Ilahi highlighted frequent high-level talks between India and Iran during the conflict period.
“Maybe three times or more, PM Modi had a successful conversation with our president. It was very good,” he said. He added that India’s External Affairs Minister also held “very successful conversations” with his Iranian counterpart.
Ilahi’s remarks come amid a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States after recent tensions in West Asia.

Emotional Message for Indian People
Speaking about Indians, Ilahi became emotional and expressed deep gratitude.
“Our brothers and sisters in India, I cannot describe them. Whenever I remember them, I cry. They are excellent. I cannot find words to express their value,” he said.
He added, “I would like to congratulate all our brothers and sisters in India for having such beautiful people. They are extraordinary.”
Safety of Indians in Iran a Priority
Ilahi stressed that ensuring the safety of Indians living in Iran, especially students, remains a top priority.
“This is my responsibility,” he said. “We arranged accommodation for around 3,000 students and ensured they were moved to safe places. With support from the Indian embassy, all students remained safe.”
He described protecting Indian nationals as both a duty and a commitment of the Iranian authorities.
Iran’s Stand on Conflict
Speaking about the conflict, Ilahi said Iran did not want war and blamed the United States for escalating tensions using bases in Arab countries.
“We did not want this war; it was imposed on us,” he said. “The United States did not attack from its own land but used bases in other countries.”
He also claimed that Iran targeted only American military bases and not civilians. “We never attacked civilians. We want good relations with our neighbours,” he added.
Strait of Hormuz and Future Stability
On the future of the Strait of Hormuz, Ilahi said the decision lies with Iran but expressed hope for continued peace.
“Before the war, the Strait was open and there were no problems. We hope the ceasefire continues and everyone benefits from stability,” he said.
Strengthening India-Iran Ties
Ilahi’s remarks underline the strong people-to-people ties between India and Iran, along with growing diplomatic engagement during times of crisis.
He also expressed hope that regional countries would better understand Iran’s position and work towards peaceful relations in the future.
