Jamia Millia Islamia administration has set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for completing and implementing the university’s Students’ Union constitution, paving the way for union elections.

According to the administration’s decision, elections will be held within six weeks of the academic session beginning on July 16, 2027.

The university has also directed the revocation of disciplinary notices, suspensions, rustications and campus bans linked to the protest period.

The administration has asked students to call off their hunger strike immediately. However, students said the decision on whether to end the protest and hunger strike would be taken collectively after deliberations.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing agitation demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), which began on October 12.

Students Had Demanded December Deadline

The university’s decision comes after protesters demanded that the Students’ Union constitution be approved by December 20.

The administration has instead set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for completing and implementing the constitution, with elections scheduled to follow within six weeks of the new academic session beginning.

The revocation of disciplinary action and campus bans linked to the protest is another key part of the decision.

Students have been demanding the restoration of an elected union and a democratic platform to represent their concerns on campus.

Students to Decide on Hunger Strike

Despite the announcement, it remains unclear whether the students will call off their agitation immediately.

Protesting students said the decision would be taken collectively after discussions, indicating that the administration’s directive alone would not determine the immediate future of the hunger strike.
