Jamia Millia Islamia will resume offline classes on November 10. The announcement comes a day after students ended an 18-day protest, saying the university had agreed to a timeline for restoring the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).

The Registrar’s Office issued the order on Friday, October 30. Online classes will continue until November 9. The second mid-term examinations, which had been announced as virtual, will now be held offline from November 16 to 21. The order also says all other student activities will return to offline mode as per the academic calendar for 2026-27.

The university also said it will withdraw all show-cause notices and disciplinary proceedings started against students who took part in the protest.

Students called off the agitation late on Thursday night, after the administration announced a timeline for bringing back the union. That paves the way for an elected student body at Jamia after nearly two decades. Students celebrated the university’s announcement as a “victory for our rights”. A sticking point in an earlier attempt at settlement was the lack of specific dates, according to reports.

The protest began after students demanded the restoration of JMISU and an election schedule. Members of the United Students of Jamia Millia Islamia held a sit-in at the main campus, and some students went on hunger strike.

On October 24, the university moved all classes online as a “precautionary measure”. Students had been attending classes from home since then.

Student union elections have long been a flashpoint at central universities.

Jamia has not had an elected union for close to twenty years, and demands for its revival have come up repeatedly.
